TAG On The Mountain
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Version 09.29.2007
September 29, 2007

IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) This FAQ has not been maintained since late 2005.  The maintenance of this FAQ will soon be transferred to someone more active in the DCG, and hence then it should be easier to keep this file up-to-date.

2) Please note that there is no longer a TOTM Yahoo group.  Work weekend information is available via TAGNET, DCGNET, and DCG grotto meetings.

The following is a list of frequently asked questions that have either appeared on the old "Tag On The Mountian" Yahoo group, or have been fielded directly by members of the DCG Cave-In Advisory Board (CAB).

This document will always be a work in progress for as long as it's existance is needed.

The latest version of this FAQ is always posted at http://www.tagfallcavein.org and pointers to it will frequently appear on the "tagonthemountain" Yahoo! group.

FAQ

1.0 Why a FAQ?

A "Frequently Asked Questions" document places the most common concerns of a forum or mailing list all in one concise indexed document. If you have just joined the "tagonthemountain" Yahoo! group, this makes it un-necessary to wade through all the older forum messages to find the answer to a common question.

If you feel the need to post a question on the forum, reading the FAQ (plus the recent forum messages posted since the FAQ was updated) will make it less likely that you will embarrass yourself by asking a question answered a gazillion times before...

2.0 TOTM (Tag On The Mountain) Location

2.01 Where is the new TAG site?

The address is:   2477 Old State Route.

The new TAG site is in Walker and Dade counties in the state of Georgia on the top of Lookout Mountain.

The area is approximately 160  acres, roughly in a square of 2600 feet.

Directions to the new tag site:

IMPORTANT:

The site is only open during the work weekends. There are contractors working on site at other times and we need to stay out of their way.

Please use the directions below for your first visit. There are several other ways to get to the site but are too numerous to list here. Be aware that some of these roads don't see a lot of traffic so the locals are not expecting to see a large increase in traffic. Watch out for people, horses, and other livestock on the lesser traveled roads.

From Trenton, GA at I-59:

Follow GA 136 EAST 11 miles to GA 157. Turn RIGHT then proceed 5 miles south to Old State Road. Turn RIGHT and go roughly 2.3 miles and turn LEFT onto TAG MTN. WAY (there is a blue street sign here). There is a small pond on the left just before the driveway.

From LaFayette:

Follow GA 136 WEST 13 miles to the top of Lookout Mountain. Turn LEFT on GA 157. Proceed 5 miles south to Old State Road. Turn RIGHT and go roughly 2.3 miles and turn LEFT onto TAG MTN. WAY (there is a blue street sign here).   There is a small pond on the left just before the driveway.

From Atlanta (or elsewhere on I-75 corridor)   ---> two options:

From I-75 via LaFayette:

Take the GA 136, Resaca exit (320) and proceed WEST to the city of LaFayette. A WalMart is located just off Hwy 136 on the north side of LaFayette for last minute supplies. From Lafayette Follow GA 136 WEST 13 miles from to the top of Lookout Mountain. Turn LEFT on GA 157. Proceed 5 miles south to Old State Road. Turn RIGHT and go roughly 2.3 miles and turn LEFT onto TAG MTN. WAY (there is a blue street sign here). There is a small pond on the left just before the driveway.

From I-75 via Summerville:

Take the GA 140, Adairsville exit (306) and proceed west. At US 27 turn RIGHT (north) and proceed to the city of Summerville. Just after crossing the railroad tracks in Summerville turn RIGHT onto GA 48. Follow GA 48 WEST from Summerville through Menlo to the top of Lookout Mountain. Turn RIGHT onto GA 157. Follow GA 157 NORTH approximately 21 miles and turn LEFT on Old State Road. Go roughly 2.3 miles and turn LEFT onto TAG MTN. WAY (there is a blue street sign here). There is a small pond on the left just before the driveway.

2.02 What is the site like?

The new TAG site is located about 1/2 mile off of a paved road. The site is mostly wooded and the terrain is more or less gently rolling. There is a very small stream running accross the property. The stream divides the property appoximately 1/4 -- 3/4. The site was clearcut approximately 25 years ago.

2.03 Are pictures of the site available?

There are some pictures available at www.tagfallcavin.org.   Since the work weekends have started, other individuals may have posted pictures elsewhere, as well.

2.04 Are there any alternative campsites nearby?

Cloudland Canyon is relatively close, and Desoto State Park is not too far of a drive, either.

3.0 Development Plans

3.01 The DCG doesn't seem to be listening to my ideas. Isn't input from the TAG community valuable?

Yes! The DCG wants the whole TAG community to be involved. Please understand that there is a HUGE amount of work to do before next October though, and this first year we must concentrate on the basics! Do post your ideas on the forum, but please do not be upset if you do not get immediate feedback. The DCG and CAB will be getting a huge amount of feedback from all kinds of directions in the upcoming months, and you must remember that they are human.

On the other hand, please remember that the move of TAG to TOTM is a DCG project, and the DCG has elected the CAB and bestowed upon them, in conjunction with the DCG executive committee, the power to make all the related executive decisions related to the TAG fall cave-in. It is necessary to empower a small team to pull off the TAG Fall Cave-In and the move to TOTM, since productivity can fall close to zero when decisions are made by huge committees (like the entire grotto, or the entire TAG community). Please understand that we cannot make everybody happy and it is nearly guaranteed that you will be unhappy with one or more CAB or EC decisions. Such is the nature of life.

The TAG Fall Cave-In has since it's beginning been and remains an official event of the Dogwood City Grotto.

3.02 Will there be camping sites with water and power like there was at Seqouyah?

There will be NO water and electricity at individual camping sites in the forseeable future. However, there are water stations on-site that are marked on the site map.   Also, there is a now a bath-house facility on-site too!  The master plan for the development of this property is a continual work in progress, but in the past year, the following improvements have been made:

a) Camping space nearly doubled
b) New Registration Building completed
c) Spa area improved ---
     * New deck around hot tub
     * New sauna building
     * New fence
d) New Stage
e) Kiddie playground
f) Several new trails connecting main field to camp areas
g) Bath house improvements

4.0 Work to be done

4.01 What can I do to help?

Keep up to date on the development plan via the "tagonthemountain" forum, as well as other sources such as Tag-Net, DCGNET,  DCG grotto meetings, etc... and help us out on the work weekends. Contribute your ideas on the "tagonthemountain" forum too.

4.02 When are the "work weekends"?

Work weekends occur on a regular basis.  Announcements are made on DCGNET, the "tagonthemountain" forum, and Tag-Net.

4.03 What skills are needed for site development?

Requests for help from people having special skills will be posted on the "tagonthemountain" Yahoo group (and possibly other places like Tag-Net).   On the scheduled work weekends, there will be plenty for everyone to do!

Needs for the following skills have already been identified.  If you have any of these skills and want to help, please contact Jeff Martin of the DCG:

Masons/Bricklayers
Plumbers
Concrete workers/finishers
Carpenters
Arborists

Contact Jeff Martin (jeffnina@earthlink.net or 770.307.3883 if you have specific skills or equipment that may be useful.

5.0 Information dissemination

5.01 How can I keep informed about the development of the TAG property?

Bill Stringfellow of the DCG, maintains a Yahoo! group called "tagonthemountain" for just this purpose. This venue is the place for you to read about the latest development news and ask your questions. Please make sure you have read the entire FAQ and read the recent posts (items posted after the date of the latest FAQ) before you post your question however, so that you do not clog the forum with ground that has already been covered.

If you are not a member of the Yahoo! "tagonthemountain" group, contact Bill Stringfellow.  His email address is not posted here (because a SPAMBOT may harvest it), but anybody in the Dogwood City Grotto should be able to get you his contact information.

5.02 How often is the FAQ revised? Is it the official word?

The FAQ will be revised as often as possible, based on reasonable effort and whether there is new stuff to be added. This FAQ may at times be maintained by somebody who is not a CAB member, but a new version will never be released without approval of a representative of the CAB. Items in the FAQ may change from time-to-time, and new versions may even contradict older versions. The DCG and the CAB reserve the right to change their minds about development plans and many other things!

5.03 Who are you spunkymudwizard?

If you use a nickname in the yahoo forum, please place your real name at the end of your posting. Since we are trying to accomplish real work on the forum (harvesting ideas, getting opinions, etc...) we need to know who we are talking with. Think about "tagonthemountain" as more of a business meeting than an internet social group.

6.0 What is the CAB?

The Cave-In Advisory Board (CAB) is a committee within the Dogwood City Grotto. Its charter is oversight and long range planning for the TAG Fall Cave-In. The CAB has 5 members: Current Cave-In Chair, Past Cave-In Chair, and 3 members from the DCG.

Scheduled CAB meetings are announced in advance at Dogwood City Grotto meetings and published in the DCG publication "The Hole Story".  These are open meetings which are held in the Atlanta area.  Concerned and interested individuals are encouraged to attend.
